Effective Competition

How many sellers are actually competing for the buy box

Effective Competition counts how many sellers are priced close enough to actually compete for the buy box, rather than just how many sellers are listed. A listing might have 20 sellers, but if only 3 are within buy box range, the effective competition is 3.

What It Measures

This metric looks at all the current offers on a listing and counts how many sellers are priced within a competitive range of the buy box price (within 5% of the reference price). Sellers priced significantly higher are effectively out of the running and are not counted.

It also calculates the ratio of effective competitors to total sellers, giving you a sense of how many listed sellers are actually playing to win.

Why It Matters for Resellers

The total seller count can be misleading:

  • A listing with 15 sellers but only 2 effective competitors is actually a low-competition opportunity. Most of those 15 sellers are priced too high to win the buy box.
  • A listing with 5 sellers where all 5 are effective competitors is a genuinely competitive listing where you will be fighting for share.
  • Low effective competition means fewer sellers are at competitive prices, which can mean more buy box time for you if you price appropriately.

How We Calculate It

  1. We identify the reference price. When the Buy Box price is available, we use it. When the Buy Box is unavailable (suppressed or absent), we fall back to the median new offer price.
  2. We count how many sellers have offers within 5% of that reference price.
  3. We classify the result based on the count:
    • 1-2 effective sellers = low competition
    • 3-5 effective sellers = moderate competition
    • 6 or more effective sellers = high competition

How to Read the Results

| Classification | What It Means | |---------------|---------------| | Low (1-2 sellers) | Only 1-2 sellers are priced competitively. The buy box is controlled by very few players, making entry difficult without matching their price. | | Moderate (3-5 sellers) | 3-5 sellers are priced within buy box range. There is meaningful competition but room for another competitive seller. | | High (6+ sellers) | 6 or more sellers are priced to compete for the buy box. The buy box rotates widely, which means more opportunity but potentially thinner margins. |

Limitations & Caveats

  • This is a point-in-time snapshot. The number of effective competitors changes as sellers adjust prices. A listing that has low competition today might have high competition tomorrow.
  • The 5% threshold is a general guideline. Amazon's actual buy box eligibility criteria consider many factors beyond price, including fulfillment method, seller metrics, and shipping speed.
  • Does not account for FBA vs. FBM. An FBM seller priced 3% below the buy box might still lose to an FBA seller at the buy box price.
  • Sellers can enter and exit quickly. Repricing bots may push sellers in and out of the competitive range throughout the day.
